Moving

So, here I am, yet again, planning to rearrange my life drastically. Actually, I've been at this job for 8 months now, and that is the longest I've ever had just one job EVER before. AND I lived in the same place for this whole time. I haven't experienced this much continuity since high school.

And yet I'm back to the place I've come to know and half-despise: I have to move and I probably won't keep this job.

But do I know what I actually WANT, yet? Nope. Not a clue.

I think I want a job that requires travel. . . I won't move until I find a job, of course. The other moving options at the moment include: staying in this area at this job, staying in this area w/ a NYC job, moving to NYC w/ a NYC job, staying in this area with some other job. . .

Right now I'm considering moving to Boston.

Anyone in the Boston area want to comment on Boston vs NYC lifestyle, cost of living, people, that sort of thing? My sister loves Boston, I've visited a few times but never stayed enough to form an opinion of living there. I'd love input.

Hiya!

Found your blog through a LiveJournal community called “Punk Knitting”. :) I’ve been living in Boston a while now, and I can say that out of all the places I’ve lived, this is the only one where I’d want to settle down. Fabulous place. I’ve found it to be a mecca of good beer, good clubs, good museums, good music, good bookstores, good yarn stores, and a whole bunch more good stuff. The only bad things about it are the winter cold (well, that’s all the Northeast really), and driving here. It’s why I take the T everywhere, which is really very convenient. Yeah, Boston kicks ass. :)

I did that sort of things for years — moved to different cities, different countries, different careers… To my baffled consternation, I appear to be in my longest period ever in a small town in PA. NOT my usual milieu. But all I know about Boston is how high the cost of living is.

With my new job I will be happy to not go to Boston. This could be b/c I work in the financial industry (dry), but I generally find the folks clicky and not friendly, and a little judgemental.

I am a very happy Bostonian! Yes, the cost of living is pretty high, but it’s not quite at the price bracket of Manhattan living (from what I hear from NYC friends). I’m still in the “student frame of mind,” but I do hear that Bostonians can be a little bit unfriendly and reserved – it can be hard to break into a social scene, I guess. It’s a nice city, though – it doesn’t feel very big or intimidating compared to the hugest metropolis. The T is very bureaucratic and a little too sporadic, if that matters…but I love living here, and I’ll be sad to leave! Hope this helps a bit!

I moved to Boston from the Midwest when I was 21. I didn’t know a single soul but found people to be very friendly. The city is small yet cosmopolitan enough to be interesting. I fell in love with the brick buildings, the architecture, the different neighborhoods, the universities, the proximity to the Cape, NH and VT. And I’m still loving it after all these years. Wouldn’t live anywhere else. Ok, maybe Hawaii. I’ve heard the weather there is awesome. :)
