I dont know if this will work but you might try Mission Falls 1824 Cotton yarn.

Are you connecting them right away w/o blocking? Curious because that’s what I think you’re doing yet your blocks looked “blocked,” if you know what I mean. Your crocheting skills must be as highly developed as your knitting!

Haven’t seen the new store yet but will stop by sometime soon & catch up. My Zara ripple is halfway done, but I’ve started another — a throw in Blue Sky cotton.
