After playing at Loop-d-Loop for

Posted on January 12, 2002 | 0 Comments

After playing at Loop-d-Loop for a while, I've decided to make myself one of her "neck pieces" that she calls a cowl. I wouldn't call it a cowl, to me a cowl is a neckline that looks like an oversized turtleneck, but I don't know what to call it. It's sorta like an oversized dikey that you wear over your clothes? Anyway, I'm already almost half-way done with it! I'm using Lamb's Pride Bulky (thank you again Alison H. for the yarn!), and size 10 needles. I started at the neck, and worked one of those open-down-one-side w/ buttons turtlenecks, in k4 p1 ribbing. Now I'm on the shoulder/chest part, gotta figure out the increases. I need this to cover my upper chest so that when I'm wearing v-necks the wind doesn't go right down my shirt. I'm so excited for this! It's gonna be the most-worn winter accessory in my closet, that's for sure. I'll probably make myself more of them if it works out. I bet Mel would like one, too. And they're easy! Oh maybe someone would like the pattern . . . gotta see about writing it up. I wouldn't want to sell it because it's based so closely on a Loop-d-Loop design of Teva's, and I respect Teva and her work a lot. I wouldn't profit from her idea. I wonder if it would be bad to even give the pattern away? I guess she would be making less money, because she DOES sell just the pattern for these cowls (at $10 a pattern). . . though mine is different than hers b/c it buttons up. Wow this is a tough one. If you have an opinion, email me at imt103@psu.edu. Thanks.

Wow look what someone on

Wow look what someone on the knitU list told us about! Knitting FURNITURE! Check it out:
KnitChet
Of course it's too rich for my blood, but it's very cool! Someday. . .

And if you need some creative knitting inspiration, check out Loop-d-Loop!

AH! I am so honored! Dangerous Chunky linked to me! Go check her site out, Dangerous Chunky!

As you've probably all noticed, this has become more of a rambling diary than a project checklist. Hopefully that is ok with all you readers (not that I really think there are many (any?) of you out there).

Though my most recent project "duh" is that my awesome Adrienne Vitadinni sweater is unwearable. YES, unwearable. This is the Shaped Pullover that was published in Vogue Knitting and then republished in their Very Easy Knits book. I even found the exceedingly-expensive wool on sale and make it in the right stuff. Today I put it on, it's around 30 degrees F here, and before I walked from the room to the kitchen, I was sweating. Considering I'm possibly the most permanently-cold person in Central PA, PLUS that I'm SICK at the moment, it's pretty clear that if I can't wear it today, I can't wear it EVER. SO, I spent over $100 on yarn, a bunch of hours knitting, and worse, SEWING up this sweater, then fighting with the neck and finally redesigning a new neck, only to be left with what? A very expensive, heavy, warm, beautiful. . . thing-I-have-no-use-for. It's worse than an expensive trinket or piece of jewelry, or even a silly Boyds bear or some other useless collectible. At least you can display those!!!!!! Somehow I think hanging a wool sweater on the wall would be a BAD excentric interior-design concept. PLUS, it would stretch out of shape.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I am now easing myself into the thought that one day, I will rip the sweater up and make something else out of it. Maybe a hat and scarf set, or a vest (as if I wear vests). I suppose it'd make a decent fall coat, but there isn't enough yarn for that, especially after ripping. Sigh.

Gonna have a diet coke and watch Reba to make myself feel a little less depressed. Grr and I'm still sick!

I decided, after seeing a

I decided, after seeing a mention of a knitted Christmas stocking on the Knitlist, that I wanted to make a stocking for Mel's Christmas present. I had the yarn for her present for a while, and decided that Mel will probably LOVE a yellow Christmas stocking, so I went ahead and made it. It worked up in just 2 days! It was really easy, I made it flat in order to try it out (I'd only ever made socks in the round before), using 60 stitches, on size US 8 needles, using Encore. At the top of the stocking I did garter stitch and then the rest was plain stocking stitch, with a short-row heel. It looks very nice, with a crochet loop for hanging. The only imperfection is that the toe is a bit big, so it doesn't lie flat very well. I know Mel won't care, and I have no idea how to fix it, so it's staying the way it is. I may or may not write "Mel" on it with puff paint, haven't decided yet. I think I'll use the leftover yarn for a tiny bunny for mel, that'll be the third bunny I've made her! She loves them.
My dad bought me a nice winter coat for my birthday, but it does not cover my chest area, it has a suit collar. So I am in dire need of a scarf. I have a skein of Woolease left over from the sale rack at Joann's, which I've been trying to turn into a scarf. I don't want to make anything else in stocking stitch, so I'm trying to find another stitch, and am unhappy with everything I've found online. I've tried doubling the yarn and using seed stitch, or using moss stitch. . . nothing's going well. Will keep trying.

Finished my sister's double-thick hat,

Posted on November 15, 2001 | 0 Comments

Finished my sister's double-thick hat, but I am NOT happy with it. It is not deep enough (ok do we see a trend here? I suppose it means I am impatient at knitting the hat body and want to get to the decreases ASAP), and there is not enough to fold up. I'm sure it's still going to be nice and warm for her, but I am not too happy with having to give her something I personally wouldn't wear.
I finished the knitting on the AV sweater. Started to sew up the seams, but realized I need to block it first b/c it's all ribbing and therefore is only like half as long as it should be in the body. So now instead of finishing the sweater it is marinating in the closet while I wait to block it. I only have one table that can be used for blocking at it is never visible under all the crap that's on it.

Decided to start working on Christmas present for the people that need presents. . . Mel will be getting a scarf and hat, probably, to match the mittens I already made. I may or may not make something for Matt's brother Jeff (he has requested a Harry Potter hat like the one I made for Matt), depends on how much of a jerk he's being at any particular time. My parents will not be getting anything handmade this year, because they just found out they're definitely moving to Brazil come June, so they would have no need for something warm. I suppose I could make them something in cotton or linen, but I don't have any of that, so it's not going to happen. I gotta use up the yarn I have, I have no money. Matt's mom will eventually be getting an afghan with the yarn she bought me a long time ago, but it probably won't be for Christmas. We're still not getting along so I'm not about to kill myself making her a present. Matt's dad? I was thinking of making him a sweater, but I probably don't have enough time, so he may just get a scarf. =)
