72 degrees.

In January.

In New York.

What is going on?? Today is a new temperature record, beating the old one which was a mere 63 degrees, set in 1950. When I went out to buy myself lunch I didn't even wear a coat, I was walking down Madison Avenue in a t-shirt. In January!

It is so weird that it threw my whole day off. I want some winter, dammit! I have all these great sweaters to wear! Early in the season I splurged on a new coat. I wonder if I jinxed the weather? (I've been wearing it anyway, and sweating. In January.)

Is it so much to ask for the season to change? This is supposed to be New York but it feels more like LA.

I did the same — new coat early in September or October. I even had it drycleaned recently, apparently for no reason. It’s an El Nino year, so I guess this is the nice winter. We’ll probably have snow in October this year.

Wouldn’t you know I knit a cashmere neck warmer and mitts for my sister in law in New Jersey as a holiday gift?! Probably sitting in her drawer as we speak. Hopefully it will get more seasonal soon.

If a coat purchase can jinx the weather then I also shot it a whammy! Think of it via the umbrella theory … if you schlep the umbrella all day on a chance of rain … it won’t rain. If enough of us bought new coats and knit warm snugglies … it won’t get cold.
